Sky Is The Limit

Last month I had the opportunity to guest blog over at The Leap Year Project- read my post titled "Make It Happen"  (Please note: I recently noticed TLYP Blog is no longer up and running; following is my original contribution:)

“Make it Happen”

I’ve always wanted to be a rock star.
There are countless bands, musicians, artists, and acts that I’ve seen in concert throughout the years.  Whether it was a show at First Ave, an evening at House of Blues Chicago, a worldwide event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, or a weekend at The Gorge, all of these had at least one similarity: each one was a stop on a tour.  Touring is a necessary component of any successful career as a performing artist.  Leading up to a concert, I’ll follow the band that much more closely- reading reviews of recent shows, checking out the set lists, and of course listening to the music around the clock.  In all of this, I’ve wondered what life on the road would be like… the travel, the fans, the interviews and all.
I was moving from Seattle to Minneapolis, and had a generous window of time to work with.  Seeing it as a once in a lifetime opportunity, I knew that I wanted to take the time to not only see as much as I could during the move, but also make it meaningful on multiple levels.  So I started dreaming and planning. Lots of planning.
What resulted was The “Valley to Valley” Spring Tour 2013: 14 major cities, across 10 states, all in 14 days.  My wife and I shipped all our stuff, and proceeded to hit the highway... 4,242.5 miles worth of road from start to finish. The tour was setup to further our learning, deepen the understanding of our life, and bring clarity to the vision of what is ahead.  It was also a great time to reflect and process moving from our new home in Seattle back to our established home base in Minnesota.  Along the way we had the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people and their organizations.  We found distinct moments in unique places to inspire abstract creativity.  Every step on this journey was an intentional one.

This tour relied on many people to make it as successful and incredible as it was.  We made many phone calls, sent out a ton of emails, raised financial support from friends and family, prepped our vehicle, spent hours on Google Maps, and even created a poster with matching “backstage” passes (what tour would be complete without them?).  The point is if you want to see a personal dream become your actual life, all you have to do is create the experience.  When you have a stellar idea, move forward on it by learning what it’ll take to make it happen, put in the work, and watch it come to fruition.
Your goals are exactly that; yours. Understand your power to create and cause (but not force) your ideas to happen.  Embody your beliefs and desires and there will be an unstoppable amount of leading action.
Be a rock star in your own right... you can make it happen.

Can't Hold Us

SEATTLE (Pre-Tour):
-Lots of quality time with our people and favorite places
-Had a send-off party and stayed with Chris & Rebecca Renzelman (our apprenticeship hosts, and "Seattle Parents"!) for the final week

PORTLAND (BridgeTown Inc & The Mentoring Project*):
-Conversation with Marshall Snider (Founder of BridgeTown Inc, and our host) is always a positive catalyst to think, move forward, and do great things!
-Considered along with Jim Pringle (National Cities Director, The Mentoring Project) on how The Mentoring Project could come alongside what we're looking to do
-Reminded to "Just Do It" as we toured the Nike Campus

SAN FRANCISCO (Battery Spencer):
-Although it was extremely windy, we made it up to Battery Spencer were we had an incredible view of the Golden Gate Bridge
-SF got us thinking about branding, delivery, history, and preservation

VENTURA (Big Sur and the PCH):
-Ventura itself was included on the tour, simply as a place to stay the night after driving down the California coast along the Pacific Coastal Highway
-Big Sur National Park is a convergence of beauty- what elements of your life come together to form something amazing?

LOS ANGELES (Stoked Mentoring):
-Spoke with Kathryn James-Jolly (Program Coordinator, STOKED Los Angeles) about their programs, target audience, and overall goal
-Learned about the art and process of creating: got to see Hollywood Blvd, 311's "The Hive" studio, Beverly Hills, and the hospital where "Grey's Anatomy" is filmed!

COSTA MESA (National Network of Youth Ministries & Mika Community Development Corporation):
-Lots of encouragement and making memories with our hosts Mike & Kristi DeVito (SW Regional Director, National Network of Youth Ministries), as we understood more of their SoCal life and ministry
-Special opportunity with Christine Brooks Nolf (Executive Director & Co-Founder of Mika CDC) to tour neighborhoods, hear stories, grasp empowerment, envision sustainable change, and gain practical tips

ANAHEIM (Disney California Adventure):
-Experienced the magic first-hand as we strolled Buena Vista Street, cruised into Cars Land, and witnessed the World of Color show on Paradise Pier!
-The unmatchable power of creativity and imagination took us to new heights

LAS VEGAS (The Strip):
-The continual reinvention and sheer amazement of Vegas reminds us to never stop progressing
-Were refreshed while staying at the MGM Grand and hanging poolside for hours

SANTA FE (The Grand Canyon):
-Some things have to be seen to be appreciated, and being there during sunset let us see it in a changing light... invite people to experience transformation
-To see God in it all breeds meaning to the experience

COLORADO SPRINGS (Focus on the Family):
-During our time visiting Focus on the Family we were stirred by all the work and resources they put out in hopes of "helping families thrive"
-The US Olympic Training Center inspired us to gather greatness
-Garden of the gods taught us about treasuring something so much, that in the end you freely give it away so it can be experienced by as many as possible

DENVER (Red Rocks Amphitheater):
-The innovation that took place in the 1940's to dream up Red Rocks Amphitheater is staggering- how can we create a unique space within something that is already naturally occurring?
-Spending time in downtown Denver showed us how bringing in elements of playful art can add a lot to the common bond a city shares

OMAHA (The Hive Lounge):
-Our stop in Omaha worked out perfectly as Jake Gardner (Owner of The Hive Lounge) showed us around and told his story about how his love for music and his city is transforming the neighborhood through positive business

DAVENPORT (Clark-side Family):
-In Iowa we took time to slow down and "just be" with family, and there's never a bad time for that (although our exhaustion after two weeks on the road began hitting us)...

TWIN CITIES (End of Tour)
-We have been delighted to see many of our friends and family since returning, and in it have had the opportunity to share about our life in Seattle
-Following our return, we hosted "Reflections in the Journey"- it was a night where we used our experience in Seattle as a framework for an open dialogue about everyone's life (passion/growth/community)
-Josh returned to working for Life Time Fitness, and Shelley has been doing lots of planning for her full summer teaching schedule at the Eagan Art House (and already subbed a day for an elementary art room)
-We are moving forward on the vision for future things to come, in peace and through simple steps of obedience

Overall we learned the reality that all of life really is a classroom- we found extreme value in every destination, conversation and location.  Thank you so much for allowing us the opportunity through your love, encouragement, support, and prayers.

Radioactive

4,242.5 miles. 10 States. 14 Cities. 14 days.
The "Valley to Valley" Tour was nothing short of epic (an overused word, which here is entirely appropriate) as we barreled across the US.  We made meaningful connections with leaders along the way who inspired us with their stories, and encouraged us to keep moving forward in our vision.  Although we are still processing everything, the tour was a great buffer time between life in Seattle and finding a new life in the Twin Cities.  And obviously we had a blast as we experienced life on the road.  Here's a few snapshots from the Spring tour:

To Seattle and Back Again
It is hard to believe that our time in Seattle is nearly up- it was about this time one year ago that we had just arrived.  On our trip out here the point was to get from the Midwest to the Northwest, with little in between.  We’ll never forget that drive… our little hatchback was packed full with our necessary belongings and our heads just as full of questions.  What was ahead of us?  How would this all shape up? Who would we meet and develop relationships with?  As we began our new journey, we were headed into the unknown.

Now, we have had the great joy of experiencing this past year and living out the answers to all these questions.  It has been such an incredible time of growth for us.  So much is being learned personally, practically, relationally, and spiritually.  We’re also connected with some really amazing people in both places, leaving us torn between the two.

Spring Tour 2013

So as we prepare to move back, we’re making the most of it by going on The “Valley to Valley” Spring Tour!  We’ll be going from the Rainier Valley neighborhood in Seattle, and eventually returning to Apple Valley, Minnesota.  Along the way we’ll have the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people and their organizations.  We’ll also find distinct moments in unique places to inspire abstract creativity.  Every step on this journey is an intentional one.  This tour will further our learning, deepen the understanding of our calling, and bring clarity to the vision of what is ahead.  It’ll also be a great time to reflect and process moving from our new home in Seattle back to our established home base in Minnesota.

To fund the tour, we’re seeking “by the mile” sponsorships.  We’ll make our way across nearly 4,000 miles… at an overall cost of 50 cents per mile, how many miles will you cover?  50 miles? 200 miles? A particular leg of the trip? 1,000 miles?

How many miles will you support on The “Valley to Valley” Spring Tour?

I'll Be Here A While

From neon to ink

1. "Fresh"
The definition itself, and its relation to life, faith, love...

- Original
- Full of or renewed vigor; life
- Of great quality
- New, newness, newly
- Unlike the others; uncommon
- Attracts
- Not faded
- Just arrived
- Immediate pursuit
- Re-creation
- Desirable taste
- Reached, but not passed the optimal stage (of maturity, for use)
- Seeing new in the proper light
- Renewal

And it goes on, and on...

Pike Place Market

2. Seattle

A tribute to this city- where we celebrated our wedding and new marriage with a honeymoon (March 2010), received new direction while on a visit out here (late '10), and now lived in from '12-'13, (and of course Grey's).  Our honeymoon, that visit, and living here have all represented a new beginning.  And maybe even a challenge from which the fresh could then flow.  The ways we have grown and continue to grow as a result of our time in this city, continue to prepare us for what is still ahead in the future.  God has given me a unique time of very specific equipping, in understanding myself and my story, that will help me in serving fatherless youth.  A time to dream up and receive from.  The culture, our friends, our church.  Seattle is known for being a bright light despite the grey skies, always leading the way in innovation. Risk-taking for the greater good, that ol' "Pioneer Spirit".  Pike Place Market (where "my" neon sign resides): a symbol of creativity, authenticity, and a favorite spot in the city.  Always exciting, always entertaining.

3. Upstream

My "Seattle Pastor" Mark Driscoll introduced this awesome idea of what it means to live "upstream".  It represents our heart to live on mission in the city.

- "If you want to clean up the river, you start upstream" (At the source).
- "To effect change you get as far upstream as you possibly can" (The source influences what everyone along the river receives and experiences).

-"So it is culturally"

- "God's people need to get upstream and change things at the highest levels"
- "Culture is made upstream in cities"  (Cities are the source of culture).
- "...Culture, and education, and art, and transportation, it emanates in the city and then it goes out to the rural areas"
- "...You have to move to a city, because that's where the clubs are, and that's where the record labels are, and that's where the media is, and culture goes from that place" (Things with reach and influence are based in the city).
- "(The river) flows upstream-downstream. Cities are upstream. Cities are two things: density and diversity"
- "(Paul's) missionary journeys are from city, to city, to city, to city, to city, to city. He avoided rural areas" (Paul knew about impact).
- "Get upstream and make a cultural difference"
- "Getting upstream allows God's people to effect change that would otherwise not be possible"
- "Examine how upstream you are. What influence, what authority, what opportunity has God given you to effect change at whatever point you live in the river?"
- "How could you get further upstream?"
- "You've got to try to get as upstream as you possibly can"
- "If God has placed you upstream ...will you give a voice to the voiceless?" (for me: the Fatherless)
- "It's strategic, it's missiological, and it's biblical"
- "Jesus started rural, but to really go upstream, he had to go to Jerusalem. He died, ascended into Heaven, and right now Jesus is as upstream as it gets"

(All taken from “Jesus Is A Better Missionary” / Pastor Mark / 11.11.12 / Mars Hill Church)

4. Salmon

Last Fall we had the opportunity to visit a couple "salmon ladders"- an artificial environment were the natural migration of the Pacific salmon can be observed.  I became fascinated with these creatures, and the lessons and inspiration found within their story...

- Adapt between fresh and saltwater
- In their very nature to swim against the current.
- Instinctively return to where they spawned (from the ocean, back into their "home stream").
- Overcome many obstacles and dangers along the way.  Must beat the odds of survival: 90-95% don't ever make it back or out alive.
- Literally leap to move forward.
- Some eggs get swept away by the currents- never allowing full growth or life itself. Not to mention the many predators.
- As a "smolt", salmon drift downstream toward the ocean, but still face upstream in order to feed.
- Adult salmon stop feeding and their bodies change as they begin to swim back upstream.
- With the last of their energy, these fish lay eggs that will become the next generation of salmon. Salmon contribute even in death.
